Meta's own AI agent now answers WhatsApp chats for some businesses. It's free to start in the app and about 4–5 US cents a message on the API, by Meta's estimate. On the API, turning it on puts other agents on your number on standby.
Or scan with your phone
Meta launched it in India on 14 May 2026 as Business AI on WhatsApp, inside the WhatsApp Business app. On 3 June 2026 Meta introduced Meta Business Agent, “expanding our Business Agent to businesses of all sizes globally” across WhatsApp, Messenger and Instagram. Since 1 July 2026 businesses on the WhatsApp Business Platform can use it too, through a provider or directly.
“Globally” is doing some work there. The app's own help center still says the feature is “currently only available in limited countries to select businesses”, so you may go looking for it and find nothing.
In the app, Meta says it can learn from your chats from the past six months, your catalog, documents and photos you upload, and your website, along with the business description, address and hours on your profile. On the API it works from business info, FAQs, files and websites you give it.
A customer can always ask for someone from your team, and the app keeps a list of chats the AI has handed off. On the API the handover is automatic, on signals such as low confidence, a rule violation or a customer asking for a person, and Meta notes that “you do not configure the triggers”. Your own systems can still take a chat back at any time.
For scale: an ordinary reply on the WhatsApp Business Platform costs US$0.0034 in the US and Canada and US$0.0014 in India (see the pricing calculator). That rate doesn't include any AI, though. Use your own agent and you pay Meta for the reply and your agent's provider separately, so compare the totals, not the per-message figures.
On: in the WhatsApp Business app, open Tools, choose the AI agent, then accept and confirm. Meta says it can take several minutes to start answering.
Not showing: Meta's answer is blunt. “If you don't see the AI agent option in the Tools tab, Meta Business Agent isn't available for your business yet.” You might be offered a waitlist, which doesn't guarantee access. No waitlist means it isn't offered in your country yet; Meta says that isn't a problem with your account.
Off: Meta's help articles name the menu differently. One says Tools → Your AI agent → AI replies, then pause it for new chats. The other says Tools → Meta Business Agent → Response settings → Disconnect AI, where you can pause replies or disconnect and delete it. Look for whichever your app shows. Replying to a chat yourself pauses the agent in that chat.
One more line from Meta's help center worth reading before you switch it on: messages in chats where the agent is connected “will still be collected by Meta to improve AI at Meta, even when you mute” the agent. Deleting the agent is what stops it.
If you sell from a catalog, most of your questions are the same handful, and you're happy for Meta to decide when a chat goes to a person, Meta Business Agent is the obvious place to start. It lives where your chats already are, and the app version costs nothing up to its limit.
A dedicated agent makes more sense when:
Whichever you pick, pick one per number. The standby rule above means the two can't answer side by side on the API.
One note for clinics: on the API, Meta lists Health among the verticals its agent doesn't serve, with Finance, Government, Alcohol, Gambling, over-the-counter drugs and matrimony services. That's a reason for care with any AI agent on WhatsApp in healthcare.
